Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian (Canadian-American) is an activist in the field of feminist media as well as a public speaker, and Canadian. Feminist Frequency provides videos, commentaries and analysis of portrayals in popular cultures. Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian-American journalist and critic that has received accolades for her work. She is a feminist blogger. Feminist Frequency is a non-profit educational website which investigates representations of women in the popular media narratives. Aiming to break down the stereotypes associated with women in popular culture, she works to highlight issues related to targeted exploitation of women as well as other classes of individuals in the internet environment. A graduate in political and social thought from York University Sarkeesian is also well-known as a sought-after speaking engagement and has given speeches at TEDxWomen XOXO Festival and The United Nations' Broadband Working Group on Gender. From an early age Sarkeesian was captivated with gender issues and feminist thought. As a student, in 2009, she launched her Feminist Frequency Website. A woman with ambitions to launch a web-series that would examine the gender representation of video games was targeted by the internet campaign. However, the attacks did not dissuade her. The experience only strengthened her in her role as a feminist journalist. In recognition of the many achievements she's made for feminist movements, she has been recognized with numerous awards. Anita Sarkeesian won awards for her work as a critic of the media, and she founded Feminist Frequency. The non-profit examines how women are depicted in popular culture of today.
